Cuando llegas a un país que no es el tuyo, hay cosas básicas que hay que aprendérselas muy pronto, sanidad y educación creo que son las mas importantes, sobretodo cuando vas con niños.
Hoy quiero explicaros un poco el sistema educativo en Londres, ( creo que en cuanto sales de la ciudad es un poco diferente) bueno o las conclusiones a las que he llegado, después de no poco esfuerzo:
When you arrive to one country that it is not yours, you need to understand as quicly as you can 2 things, the health system and the education system. Today I want to explain a little bit how the schools works in London (I think it is different when you go out of this crazy city):
Guarderías/
Nursery:
Hay diferentes tipos de guarderías, "Nursery Day"o "Nursery". La primera se entiende mas flexible, es mas de jugar, mas relajada. Nursery se consideran como el paso anterior a ir al cole, como preescolar. Son mas disciplinadas y mas de enseñanza. La mayoría tiene hasta los 5 años.
You can find different types of nurseries "Nursery Day"o "Nursery". The first one it it is more flexible, more to play, more relaxed. The "nursery" it is the step before starting school and it is more discipline and educational.
En mi caso, mi hija va a una "Nursery Day" y tiene la suerte de tener una profesora maravillosa, que tiene un grupo de 5 o 6 niños de 3-4 años y que les enseña un montón de cosas. No creo que su nivel de aprendizaje esté por debajo de cualquier "Nursery", de hecho creo que con esta profesora su nivel es muy superior a otras muchas. Creo que depende mas del grupo con el que esté y la profesora que tengan.
In my case, my eldest daughter, she is going to a "Day Nursery" and she is very lucky because she has a outstanding teacher. She is part of the eldest group. They are 5-6 children between 3-4 years old and really she teach them a lot of things. I dont think her level of learning is below any other nursery, in fact I think she is learning a lot. I think the most important thing is having a good teacher and of course the group they have in the nursery.

Para mi el "lema" que lo resume todo es "Tu rezas o pagas".
For me the slogan here is or "You Pray or you Pay". I think it is a good summary.
Los colegios empiezan, algunos con "Nursery", con 3 años y medio. Algunos entran directamente al año siguiente en "Reception" y luego va "Primary school " de 6 a 11 años.
Schools begin, sometimes with Nursery with 3 years and a half. After that another year in Reception when they have 4 and a half. Finally Primary school from 6 to 11 years old. Not all the schools have nursery.
Hay distintos tipos de coles, los públicos, los religiosos y los privados.
You can find different kind of schools; state, religious and private.
Públicos, como en todas partes hay coles que son muy buenos y otros que son regus. Para hacer esta afirmación me baso en los informes "
ofsted reports "que deberían ser lo mas objetivos. El problema de los buenos, o tienes la suerte de vivir en la calle de al lado, o no entras. Se prima primero tener hermanos dentro y luego la cercanía al cole.
Como aqui lo de los colegios es una locura, la gente se muda en el año de inscripción en las calles cercanas y una vez que tienen plaza se mudan porque evidentemente los precios de las casas son todavía mas caros de lo normal, por la alta demanda que hay.
El problema que hay con los considerados regulares, como en todas partes, al final se han creado como "guetos" y solo van inmigrantes y gente menos pudiente.
State schools, like in anywhere you have very good schools (outstanding) and regular schools. To make this statement just check the "ofsted reports " as they are objective reports. The problem with the "outstanding schools" is that you need to live in the same street or surroundings. The first selection criteria is having the siblings already in the school and after that the proximity criteria. Arranging a schools is a nightmare. People move to live in the street of the school in the admission´s year. When they get the place they move out because the prices are higher than in another streets out of the real cachment area. The problem with the "regular" schools is that at the end they have become like "guetos" with all the immigrants there.
Religiosos, los católicos en general tienen bastante buena fama. Hay en todos los barrios y cada uno "pertenece" a una congregación o Iglesia. Para poder acceder necesitas demostrar que eres católico practicante, el párroco de la Iglesia que corresponda te tiene que rellenar unos papeles. Aquí también hay variedad, en algunos son mas estrictos que en otros, de nuevo creo que depende de la demanda de plazas que tengan. Se prima lo mismo, que tengas hermanos dentro y la cercanía al centro, a parte de tu demostración de católico.
Religious School, the Catholic schools have very good reputation. You have in all the neighborhoods and they belong to a congregation or a local Church. To get the place you need to prove that you are Catholic practicant. The priest of the church has to sign you the papers so you need to go to the Church all the sundays and also take part of the activities organized by the Church. The criteria to access is to have siblings, the proximity and the letter of the Church.
Privados, hay un montón de colegios privados. A parte de costar un dineral, no es tán fácil entrar. Has tenido que ir a una guardería determinada para que luego te admitan en el cole que quieres ir. La verdad es que no es una opción para mi, así que tampoco los he analizado mucho. Hay informes o agencias especializadas en analizar los colegios privados. Una de ellas es

Private Schools, there are a lot of them. Besides of the price (they are very expensive), it is not very easy to be admitted. You need to start sending your son/daughter to a determined nursery to get the place in the school. It is not an option for me, so I don't have a lot of information to give. What I know is all have a lovely uniforms, with their jackets and their hats.

En general me parece que tanto las guarderías, como luego los colegios no ayudan demasiado a la organización familiar. Tienen unos horarios súper reducidos, hay sesiones de guardería que son de 1-3 de la tarde (2 horas y a la hora de la siesta¡¡¡¡). Tienen las vacaciones repartidas durante todo el año "half term", al final tienen 7 semanas repartidas + mes de agosto¡¡¡ Algunos colegios tienen horario reducido un día a la semana, los miércoles solo hay cole hasta las 12¡¡
In general, my opinion is in that in this city the educational system doesn't help with the families´s with its organization. They have very limited schedules. They are even nurseries with afternoon sessions, 1-3 pm. Two hours in the nap time... it is amazing¡¡¡
They have the holidays during the hole year, so at the end they have 7 weeks distributed along the year ( half term) plus August month of holidays. And another example, some schools have one day in the week only the mornings, until 12¡¡¡
Así es el sistema, lo mejor que puedes hacer es buscar tu opción de colegio aceptando las reglas de juego porque no tiene pinta de que vaya a cambiar mucho.
This it is the system. I think the best you can do is to choose your option and play with their rules because they don't seem to change soon.
